Why?

Another throwback Thursday post.

I joined an email group for friends & family of suicides.

Today one of the topics/questions they sent out was “why did it happen?”

“In your situation, from your perspective, why is your frend or family member gone, and why was suicide the final act she or he took?”

Why did it happen?

In Ian’s case, depression won. His note said he’d been fighting this eventuality for 5+ years, and the battle was lost. He tried.

I knew he’d been fighting. I tried to help. I tried to get him to therapy, to a doctor to get medicine. But depression tricks people into thinking that nothing can help. That no matter what they do, they’re stuck feeling like that. That they’re the exception. And so that doing anything is pointless.

Severe depression is a disease. It is as terminal as heart disease, cancer, any other disease that we can’t fight without medical help. I wish the world saw it as such.
